Seriously, anybody who tells you you're doing Ghibli wrong by watching these movies dubbed. And I'm not one of those people who insists on watching these movies subbed only. Do I agree with all the changes made? No. They're not all perfect - I wasn't so thrilled with The Wind Rises, but even then it's only an average to OK dub IMO - but they're not at all bad. There's practically nothing wrong with them.

In Spirited Away, I put subtitles on while watching it dubbed with my sister, and I noticed sometimes that the English dub didn't match the subtitles for certain lines (I think the subtitles weren't exact subtitles for the English but from the Japanese movie subtitled?) I read an interview about his process and it was very interesting. Oh, and Neil Gaiman helped to write the dub script for Mononoke and he explained the choices and decisions he made in an interview he said he didn't write the dub directly word-for-word but worked with Miramax and Ghibli to create something both companies could be satisfied with (according to his website). It's been a while so I can't really say if there was any significant difference to cite example-wise, but Moro (San's wolf mother) has a male voice in the Japanese version while a female voice in English. I don't think it's a problem unless the dubbed changes a lot of meaning from the original or removes scenes like, if you say you prefer the original Nausicaa dub LOLĮdit: I watched Wind Rises, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke both sub and dub. "Warriors of the Wind" where Nausicaa became Zandra, and then the attempt by Harvey Weinstein to cut Princess Mononoke shorter. Miyazaki mostly just had negative opinions when distributors cut out scenes from his films: see the terrible first Nausicaa American release, i.e. And I first watched Spirited Away dubbed when I was a kid.Īnyways, Roger Ebert asked Miyazaki what his opinion on about his movies being dubbed in English and Miyazaki had no problem with it at all and thought it was understandable. But watching it dubbed was fine, like hearing Joseph Gordon Levitt in The Wind Rises and Christian Bale in Howl's Moving Castle was super fun. I primarily watch anime (and films) subbed, but that's mostly because I'm so used to hearing Japanese voices since I watched anime as a kid, and I want to improve my Japanese since I'm learning it now. I think it's fine to watch Ghibli films dubbed, especially since, for example, Miyazaki is seen pretty highly so you get a lot of high-profile actors dub some of the voices so IMO, it's cool to see those people voice his films because I feel like it's a sign they're trying to make the dub high quality.
